Textile design plays a subtle but critical role in the design of products, clothing, spaces and vehicles. The development of materials made from pine needles, of industrial printing with natural colours through to interactive curtains provide a focus, as do the material qualities of cultural themes such as dowry, identity or tradition. The role of textile design in the contemporary design landscape is central to the project. The ubiquity of textiles in diverse fields of design will be addressed, as will the impulses derived from the development of textile materials.

The Bauhaus centenary and the many related activities will be used as a platform to present a comprehensive picture of the school’s speciality, textile design, throughout and beyond the region. A selection of coursework and degree projects by students will be on show as well as selected textile products that illustrate the application of series production in diverse fields.

The exhibition will be shown from 8 October to 1 November 2015 in the Burg Galerie im Volkspark of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle (opening Wednesday, 7 October 2015 at 6 p.m.), from 16 March to 5 September 2016 in theBauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin and from 10 March to 5 April 2017 in the Designhaus Hessen in Mathildenhöhe. Plans for additional venues are in the pipeline.

The book published to accompany the exhibition will address the themes of the exhibition and adopt a similar structure, but will also function as a stand-alone book on textile design. It will deliver a contemporary statement on the means of influence and depict the great range and diversity of textile design.

The symposium will take place from 9 to 11 October 2015 on the themes of “Transformation” (Transformation), “Material- und Technologieexperimente” (Material and technology experiments) and “Selbstverständlich Nachhaltig?” (Naturally sustainable?). Experts from the sciences, from universities and industry will be invited to discuss and consider the themes in depth and from different perspectives.

For further information about the exhibition, the book and the symposium, go to Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle.
